Neuromuscular Dentistry DC

Temporomandibular joint disorder, more commonly known as TMJ, is a painful joint disorder that affects many Americans. As a cosmetic and general dentist practice, we provide treatment to Washington DC patients who suffer from TMJ. Dr. Varipapa specializes in diagnosis and treatments in the field of TMJ disorders and will design the right plan to correct it.

What is TMJ?

TMJ refers to two of the joints located in your jaw area, the temporal bone and the hinge jaw joint. These areas are in front of the ears, the jaw itself and the muscles surrounding the jaw. This is what helps your jaw move so that you can talk and chew.

TMJ disorders are sometimes caused by a bite problem. Not biting down properly can cause the jaw to work overtime to try to make the bite fit. This overworks the muscles and causes a painful displacement of the jaw.

Many of our TMJ patients come to our Washington DC dentist office with facial pain, jaw pain or headaches. Other symptoms may include clicking of the jaw, swelling on one side of the face, locking of the jaw, toothaches, ear pain and neck and shoulder aches. Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Varipapa has extensive training in TMJ disorders and has the most advanced diagnostic tools and treatment plans available at his Washington DC cosmetic dentist office.

Treating TMJ

Dr. Varipapa starts the TMJ evaluation by examining your bite. He discusses his findings and the options for treatment. Sometimes TMJ can be treated quickly with very few office visits. Dr. Varipapa may provide you with a home treatment plan as well. This may include taking aspirin, placing warm compresses on the affected areas, applying special stretching techniques, eating soft foods and resting the jaw. Treatment at our DC office varies, depending on the severity of the pain and any damage that may have taken place.

Dr. Varipapa may fit you with a splint or bite plate to help correct your bite and relieve the TMJ pain you are experiencing. A bite guard may be used to prevent teeth grinding. Other options include cortisone shots and surgery to correct the bite. With Dr. Varipapa's extensive training, he can help you to live a pain-free life once again. We will work hard to find a solution to your disorder and help you sleep, talk and eat again without any pain. Call our dentist office in Washington DC today for TMJ treatment.
